Deschutes Brewery has always been family owned and operated. An Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP) was set up in 2013 so employees now own a percentage of the company. “We are not owned by, or selling to, any large brewer or other entity, nor do we have any plans to. We’re having too much fun to change.” — Gary Fish, Founder and President.
We suggest hopping in the car and driving to the nearest state where we distribute or calling a friend who lives in one of the states above and asking them to ship some your way through a legal mailing option.
It’s a size thing. Though both pour premium ingredients, passion and experimentation into the work, micros typically serve local audiences only and produce less than 15,000 US beer barrels per year. Craft Brewers take that same commitment to a wider audience.
We wish we could but due to state and federal distribution laws, Deschutes Brewery cannot sell or ship beers to consumers over the phone or via the internet.

It’s not always perfect and we apologize in advance for that. If Deschutes is new in your area (NJ, IN) our Beer Finder may not be up to date yet as we work on adding new stores across those states. While we are doing so, we suggest chatting with the manager at your local store and let them know you’d love to see Deschutes! If we distribute in your state and you are having trouble finding your favorites or if you are noticing expired beer on the shelves near you, we will pass your message along to our team in your area who will look into this. Putting a “Packaged On Date” on our beer cartons and labels is intended to be more consumer-friendly than a “Best By Date”. A “Packaged On Date” gives you a clear view as to how fresh the beer is, and we put a “Freshest Within 4 Months” notification on the labels of our hop-forward beers like Fresh Squeezed IPA and Mirror Pond Pale Ale. We don’t put it on the malt-forward beers like Black Butte Porter at this time, because they really do taste great up to a year after their packaged on date. If you pick up a bottle in your local retailer and you see the beer was packaged over 4 months ago (in the case of a hop-forward beer) ask your local retailer if they have a fresher package.
The sediment you are seeing in the bottle is yeast that has fallen out of solution (liquid). Since we bottle-condition our beers, a small amount of yeast is added to the beer once it’s finished to ensure the flavors our brewers intend last throughout the beer’s shelf life. This yeast will usually become more apparent the older the beer gets, so please check the Packaged On Date to make sure you’re enjoying this beer within its recommended freshness period. Consuming this yeast is not harmful, and is actually full of b-vitamins but if you’d like to avoid consuming it, wait until all the yeast has fallen to the bottom of the bottle (you can hold it up to the light to check) and then slowly pour the beer into a glass, leaving the last 1/2 inch or so of liquid and sediment in the bottle.

Our packaged products are made using hops, water, yeast, malted barley and sometimes wheat. The only preservatives we use are hops, and any additional ingredients we use are natural including sweet orange peel, coriander, cocoa nibs, figs, dates, molasses, fruit purees, etc. We do our best to always source the highest quality non-GMO ingredients whenever possible, but a few of our beers are brewed with dextrose (derived from corn). Dextrose is commonly used by craft breweries to help increase ABV without increasing the thickness of the beer, hence creating a slightly drier flavor profile because the dextrose ferments almost completely. At this point the dextrose we use is not certified non-GMO.

We do not use animal products in the cellaring or brewing process. The clarifying agent we use in our brewhouse is made from Irish Moss, a red algae. However, experimental beers brewed at our pubs sometime use lactose, isinglass, honey or other specialty ingredients, but we call it out in the description listed on the menu.
